Orthopedic Surgery in Miami, FL

At the office of Carlos J. Lavernia, MD, located in Miami, Florida, board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lavernia uses the latest techniques and technology to improve care for his patients with musculoskeletal problems.

From diagnosis through treatment, Dr. Lavernia is at the forefront of employing advanced techniques to help his patients restore range of motion and mobility in their hips, knees, and other joints.

Orthopedic Services

  • Hip, knee, and shoulder replacement: If you have debilitating osteoarthritis, you may be a candidate for joint replacement surgery. Dr. Lavernia performs a number of techniques for the hip, knee, and shoulder. After an examination, he will let you know which approach is best for you.
  • Robotic surgery: Lavernia was on the development team for the Mako® robot, the innovative haptic system that uses a mechanical robotic arm to perform total hip and knee replacements with pinpoint precision.
  • Hip and knee revision: Over time, a hip or knee prosthesis (implant) may fail for any number of reasons. Sometimes, only one component of the prosthesis needs to be revised, while in other cases, all the components need to be removed or replaced. With his vast experience, Dr. Lavernia is eminently qualified to perform hip and knee revision surgery.
  • Decompression of the hip, knee, and shoulder: Avascular necrosis is a condition in which bone tissue dies due to lack of blood flow to the bone. It most commonly affects the top of the femur (thigh bone), or ball of the hip joint, although it can also occur in the knee and shoulder. Core decompression is a surgical procedure performed in the early stages of avascular necrosis to relieve pressure and restore blood flow to the bone. The goal is to promote healing and avoid the need for a joint replacement.
  • Knee arthroscopy: This minimally invasive procedure can be used to both detect and treat problems in the knee joint. A tiny camera is inserted into a small incision to view the inside of the joint, and then miniature instruments can be inserted through another incision to repair a torn meniscus; remove bone fragments, damaged cartilage, or inflamed synovial tissue; and treat kneecap problems and infection within the joint.
